About the Culture Shift Studio
These are not people problems, they are pattern problems.
The habits nobody named, the ways of working nobody chose but everyone follows. Until you name and unlearn what is underneath, you are building on an unstable foundation.
Every CEO has felt it. The strategy is clear, and the talent is there. And still something keeps getting in the way. Their people are burnt out and disconnected, and the initiatives that should be moving things forward never land.
The Culture Shift Studio exists for one reason: most culture change fails because the invisible patterns underneath never shift. We help organizations see what is actually running the show, unlearn what is no longer working, and build something that sticks.
We call that an Essential Loveable Culture.
THE REAL PROBLEM
The Culture Shift Studio wasn't something I planned. It grew out of twenty years of learning, breaking patterns, and watching organizations try to do the same.
I spent the early part of my career in civic innovation. As a Presidential Innovation Fellow, I served as Director of Innovation for the White House and the General Services Administration, co-creating Innovation.gov and the Better Government Movement — work that reached more than three million public servants across 112 federal agencies. I was inside the machine, watching up close how culture, not strategy or technology, was the biggest influence on whether anything actually changed. We weren't just building a platform. We were building a movement. And for a while, it worked.
Then January 2017 happened. A lot of people left. I stayed, because I believed the movement was bigger than the administration, that the community we'd built was real enough to survive the transition. For two years I fought to keep it alive, watching it drift and holding it together with sheer will. Then came October 2018. I was called into a meeting, and the new director looked at me and said: "You work for me. And you work for this president." And just like that, Innovation.gov came down, the Better Government Movement was over, and everything we'd built was gone.
How this Started
I went on sabbatical and tried to make sense of what had happened. I read everything I could find and wrote a book. And I kept seeing the same pattern everywhere I looked: good ideas dying in bad cultures, movements collapsing when the mandate disappeared, people burning out not because they didn't care but because the systems around them never changed. That's when I stopped trying to explain what happened to me and started building something that could help it not happen to others.
I went to the other side of the world on what I affectionately call my "Eat, Pray, Self-Love" tour, because I didn't know what else to do. That time cracked me open to things I'd never let myself consider: groundlessness, grief, compassion, old survival patterns, and the invisible scripts we carry into every room we walk into.
When I came back, I saw workplaces differently. I could see the patterns underneath the conflicts, the habits underneath the burnout, the fears underneath the decision-making, the conditioning underneath "this is just how we do things here."
And I understood something I hadn't before:
Culture doesn't change because we create new strategies. Culture changes because people do.
That's what the Culture Shift Studio is built on.
What we actually do
We don't hand you a report and leave. We work alongside you through three phases:
1) Listen & Diagnose
We surface what's actually happening, not just what's being reported. Where is trust breaking down? Where is energy leaking? What patterns are running the show beneath the surface?
2) Align & Design
We turn values into usable ways of working that your team actually believes in, built together rather than handed down.
We run short cycles of change so new habits take root. Culture doesn't shift through announcements. It shifts through repeated, intentional practice.
3) Practice & Evolve

We believe culture change isn’t a mandate or a one-off initiative — it’s an ongoing process that requires alignment, accountability, and meaningful participation.
We work with forward-thinking leaders committed to creating cultures where strategy and humanity reinforce each other. Our approach combines narrative, data, and systems design to align purpose, performance, and people, evolving how organizations work, lead, and grow from the inside out.
OUR MISSION
We help organizations evolve into essential, lovable cultures—where emotional intelligence is practiced daily, psychological safety is the norm, and systems are designed to restore, not deplete.
Because culture change isn’t a checklist.
It’s a shared journey.
OUR VISION
We believe:
Emotional intelligence is strategy
Unlearning is a core leadership skill
Psychological safety is essential for growth
Culture lives in how we work, decide, and relate every day. We build culture with—not for—teams, aligning values with action through shared power, mutual care, and daily practice.
We listen deeply.
We surface what’s unsaid through story, strategy, and systems insight, making the invisible visible across your organization.
We co-create with care.
Our process is participatory, trauma-informed, and human-centered, designed to build trust while solving real challenges.
We build what lasts.
Instead of one-off solutions, we embed new habits, rituals, and mindsets that support long-term cultural evolution.
Unlearning before building
New programs don't stick until you release the patterns underneath them.
Pattern over symptom
Burnout, turnover, and conflict are signals. We don't treat the signal — we find the source.
This moment needs a movement
When mandate, moment, and movement find each other, change stops happening to people and starts happening with them.
Presence over performance
We show up honestly, name what's true, and create space for organizations to do the same.
Leave it better than you found it
Structure and story
Every engagement builds your capacity to keep going without us.
Data tells you what's broken. People tell you why. We work with both.
What We Believe
Meet Amy J. Wilson
Founder and Culture Futurist
Amy J. Wilson has spent more than twenty years helping mission-driven organizations diagnose what's holding them back and build the conditions for something better.
She is a former White House Presidential Innovation Fellow who co-created Innovation.gov and the Better Government Movement. She is the author of Empathy for Change and has presented at the White House, the United Nations, Google, Stanford, and the World Bank.
Before founding the Culture Shift Studio, Amy spent a decade as a sponsor in Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families: work she credits as the origin of her pattern recognition skills. She is a highly sensitive person who has spent her career turning that trait into a professional strength.
She is not a detached consultant. She has been inside the institutions she works with, watched good ideas die in bad cultures, and rebuilt her own practice from the ground up. That's the foundation she brings to every engagement.

Our Collaborators
The Culture Shift Studio works with a curated network of facilitators, strategists, and practitioners across organizational development, emotional intelligence, systems change, and leadership development. We bring in the right people for the right engagement, rather than staffing every project the same way.
